4 Ways Cashiers Can Improve Foot Safety at Work

Besides having to deal with customers chatting on their phones in the queue or screaming children knocking down that display you spent thirty minutes stacking, cashiers face physical issues from long days standing or sitting at the tills or from performing routine tasks on the job. So whether you’re a barista, a bank teller, a grocery store cashier, or a retail worker, here are 4 ways cashiers can improve foot safety at work.

1. Distribute weight evenly and stand correctly

2. Alternate sitting, standing, and walking

3. Check your feet daily

4. Wear slip-resistant footwear

Cashiers are at risk of a number of workplace-related problems such as cashier wrist pain, back pain, and periods of time spent between tasks, but they’re also in danger of the most common workplace accident: slips, trips, and falls. Whilst there are cures and remedies for wrist pain, back pain, and even boredom, foot safety is a little trickier. Here are some tips.

1. Distribute weight evenly and stand correctly

Make sure to protect your feet and joints by distributing weight evenly when standing, lifting, and bending. Correct distribution will protect the joints and stop uneven injury. It’ll also lower your center of gravity. Proper posture helps relieve and prevent pain. Make sure you feel even pressure on both your feet, especially on your foot’s tripod: balls of the big toes, little toes, and heel.  Don’t lean on one leg more than the other; it can alter your body’s alignment.

2. Alternate sitting, standing, and walking

Being a cashier can be sedentary, and when we sit too long we have lactic acid build up in our muscles because lactic acid is a byproduct of working muscles - when sitting too long, the muscles work to keep that posture, but unlike in moving muscles, circulation doesn’t help remove the excess lactic acid build up - it makes people feel fatigued. It’s important to combat fatigue by alternating between sitting, standing, and walking where possible, but make sure you’re maintaining correct posture. Moving around can improve muscle function, and keep your feet healthy and safe!

3. Check your feet daily

Since you’re on your feet often, cashiers should check their feet daily. Be sure to care for your feet by soaking them, removing dead skin, checking for bruises, and sore spots. If the balls of your feet or heels hurt constantly after a day at work, it may be time to check your footwear. Your shoes should not pinch, feel too tight, or cause rubs, or sores. They should also provide enough cushion to keep your feet pain free all day.

4. Wear slip-resistant footwear

To prevent workplace accidents and to keep your feet and body safe, it’s important to wear slip-resistant footwear at work. At SHOES FOR CREWS (EUROPE), we have specialised sole technology that helps keep cashiers safe. There’s Zone Traction, TripGuard, SpillGuard, Hoverlite, and more. Some styles have extra cushioning, ventilation, and special fits to keep you going all day long - getting you home safe. The right footwear can not only help your feet feel happy at the end of a shift but they can also help support your back and joints. Foot health is paramount, and the right footwear helps ensure your feet stay safe and healthy, especially in a physically demanding role.
